Geriatric Mental Health

Proviso Township seniors are eligible for free individual and group counseling to deal with anxiety, depression and other emotional issues related to aging. A number of mental health issues are addressing including dealing with illness, loss of family, friends and pets, adult children or grandchildren who unexpectedly move home, declining memory; and other aspects of the aging process that can be challenging and frustrating. Specialized services are available for those individuals with self-neglect issues. West Suburban Senior Services encourages Proviso Township seniors to contact its Healthy Aging Counselor for individual or group assistance. The counselor’s role is to help senior citizens define their concerns and then work with them to develop a plan of corrective action. All meetings are confidential, and there is no charge for the service.

  • Experienced Licensed Clinical Social Workers provide individual and group counseling free of charge
  • We believe the most effective approach is short term strengths based services including individual counseling (in our three office locations or home based for homebound residents) and educational support groups.

West Suburban Senior Services (WSSS) has recently expanded their Geriatric Mental Health program. The curriculum is designed to improve the well-being of Proviso Township residents over the age of 60. “Our program is unique in that we specifically focus on the needs of the older adult population,” says Janet Ogle, LCSW, Director of the WSSS Geriatric Mental Health Program.

It is common for older adults to be struggling with anxiety, family concerns, depression, loneliness, substance abuse, as well as other worries. Ogle states, “Counseling can help an individual cope with the various losses that may be occurring in their lives including the loss of a loved one, a decrease in their ability to maintain independence, or a decline in health.” Potential signs and symptoms may indicate a need for counseling. These include appetite changes, confusion, difficulty concentrating, excessive worry, forgetfulness, loss of energy, mood changes, infrequent sleep patterns, and substance abuse.

Licensed professional therapists provide individual counseling free of charge at WSSS offices as well as in-home for homebound residents. Support groups and family counseling are also available. Transportation to WSSS is offered for Proviso Township residents. If you are concerned about yourself or an older adult, please contact West Suburban Senior Services at (708) 547-5600.
